The Asia Pacific region has virtually eliminated the prospect of famine, but is haunted by hunger, with some of the fastest growing countries in the region hardly making a dent on hunger. As the co-chairs of the United Nations Thematic Working Group on Poverty and Hunger, the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific (FAO-RAP) and the UNDP Regional Centre in Colombo (UNDP RCC) are launching a year long campaign to build constituency for much needed policy reform. This bulletin signifies the launch of this extensive hunger campaign, based on a seven point coalition of process, partnership and policy.
The Seven Point Agenda to combat hunger consists of:
- Targeted interventions, such as school feeding programmes
- Judging development outcomes through hunger impact
- Reviving public investment in agriculture
- Building a national and global coalition
- Making primary education mandatory
- Providing relief to poor consumers for staple foods
- Rebuilding global food policy, including increasing investment in international research institutes
